Lady Gaga dropped the video for her new single "Applause" bright and early Monday morning, around the same time she made an appearance on Good Morning America. It is, of course, and artsy, over-the-top extravaganza — precisely what we'd expect from someone roaring back into the spotlight after a painful injury-induced absence.
In the video, directed by Gaga's fashion photographer pals Inez and Vinoodh, Gaga revisits a number of her previous incarnations, much like she does on four covers for V Magazine this month. There's early brunette Gaga writhing around in her panties on a bare mattress, "Paparazzi"-era Gaga, hysterical in a thorny cage, and a bunch of "new" versions — many of which contain loud and clear references to famous works of art old and relatively new. At one point she dances around with nothing but clam shells covering her lady bits. A Botticelli babe if we ever saw one. And she catches a knife with her teeth!
Also of note: Gaga dances hard in this new clip, which hopefully means she's fully recovered from the devastating hip injury that forced her to cancel a good chunk of her tour earlier this year.
It's nice to have her back, isn't it?
